What should I do if poor lighting at my workplace caused a fall?

If you fell at work due to poor lighting, you may have both a workers’ compensation claim and possibly a premises liability claim, depending on the situation.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Report the incident immediately to your supervisor or HR.
  2. Get medical attention, even if injuries seem minor.
  3. Take photos of the poorly lit area, especially before it's fixed.
  4. Write down everything — what time it happened, who was there, and how the lighting contributed.
  5. Contact a workers’ comp attorney to file your claim and preserve your rights.

California employers are responsible for providing safe working conditions, which includes adequate lighting. Poor visibility can lead to serious injuries — and you don’t need to prove fault to qualify for workers’ comp.
